“Why do people fall for scams”, “Why so stupid?”, “How could anyone believe that?”, “I’m sure I will not get duped!” When you see the news about scams, do you think that scams will not happen to you? Figures show that in 2020, the Police received 15,553 fraud reports, with losses amounting to $3.5 billion. The victims were of different ages, education backgrounds, occupations, and backgrounds. How did they fall prey to scams?
Fraudsters are good at using people’s kindness, fear, greed, sympathy and carelessness to defraud. They tailor-made a set of scripts for different groups of people, such as consumers who like online shopping, “wage earners” who are eager to find jobs, lonely single men and women and lustful rogues, so that the victims will slowly let their guard down and fall for the scam.
Some victims are too ashamed to report to the Police; Some others, who have suffered a slight loss at first, hope to recoup their losses and so they continue to invest more money in accordance with the scammers’ instructions, getting bogged down into a quagmire in the end.
