Fraudsters steal information through the Internet such as names, addresses, dates of birth, Hong Kong identity card numbers, email addresses, telephone numbers, bank details, credit card details and personal photographs, etc., using the victims’ stolen identities for illegal purposes, for example, to defraud.
Fraudsters steal identities through various ways such as phishing emails, fraudulent websites or fraudulent Wi-Fi hotspots. To avoid identity theft, the following preventive measures shall be taken:
- Beware of any phishing websites or emails
- Apply appropriate privacy and security settings on social networking accounts
- Do not disclose any personal information or photos online
- Set strong passwords or enable multi-factor authentication for all online accounts
- Encrypt electronic devices that store personal data and put the devices in a safe place
- Before disposing electronic devices or media (e.g. USB flash drive) containing personal data, erase data therein (e.g. using low-level formatting)
- Report to the Police if you have fallen victim to identity theft
- Complain to the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) if personal information is involved
