Abusive Online Content
In the digital age, teenagers have started to use the Internet since their childhood. Online content varies greatly. To what extent does abusive online content affect teenagers
Abusive online content exists in the form of violence, pornography, drugs, gambling, pirated / infringing items, terrorism, or materials that even adults may find it difficult to identify, such as deep fake, misinformation, frauds and information security risks. Nevertheless, have you ever think about abusive online content could even sacrifice one’s life?
Devious Licks Challenge
In September 2021, there were students across the US who took part in Devious Licks Challenge. They posted video clips of themselves destroying school facilities or stealing school items in order to show off.
Slap a Teacher Challenge
In October 2021, the Devious Licks Challenge evolved into Slap a Teacher Challenge. As its name suggests, it refers to post video clips of themselves slapping teachers. The challenge began to trend in the US and caused worry among school teachers and parents.
Blackout Challenge
In December 2021, a 10-year-old US girl suffocated by holding her breath in front of the camera when she attempted the Blackout Challenge at home.
Unfortunately, teenagers who died or injured because of Blackout Challenge or other self-harm challenges can be found everywhere.
Online contents inciting self-harm or abusive behaviours can be easily circulated, or even become a trend among teenagers and cause impacts on their mental development. As a parent or a teacher, do you know what is trending among the smartphone addict younger generation at this moment?
Parents should accompany children while using the Internet and provide guidance on how to identify and resist abusive content, as well as proper use of online resources.
